In my attempt not to demonstrate any bias in the compilation
of this list, I have purposefully not distinguished between "real" parties and "joke" parties.
Frankly, I can't always tell the difference.
Is the Libertarian National
Socialist Green Party a joke? What about the Monster Raving Looney Party?
What is the difference between a "joke" party and a party whose operation
is a joke?
Because of this, I have included every organization that I have found that
identifies itself as a political party. I'm sure that some of
these "parties" are only one person and a web page. Check out the Scorched Earth Party or the American Beer Drinker's Party.
The distinction I've made between "major" parties and "minor" parties
is my assessment of their organization. If an independent state organization exists
in a majority of the states, I have listed them as
a "major" party. This distinction currently applies to only five parties:
The Democratic Party; The
Republican Party; The Constitution Party;
The Libertarian Party; and The
Green Party.
Some of the minor parties have been seperated out and listed as an "Inactive Political Party." These are political parties which have either changed its name, merged with another party, disappeared, or whose web pages are no longer accessible.
